If you are experiencing any of these issues, you could be in need of an oil change. Here at Freedom Hyundai, we want every driver to know when it’s time to come in and schedule an oil change. Keep reading below to educate yourself on the most common symptoms of low engine oil.

Benefits of a Well-Oiled Machine

Oil ChangeA great place to start when learning about the symptoms of low engine oil is to learn about the importance of engine oil. While gasoline powers most engines these days, it’s the oil that keeps things running smoothly.

Oil acts as the main lifeblood of your vehicle’s powertrain. It keeps all the moving parts lubricated, free of sludge, and moving smoothly. A well-lubricated engine will allow your vehicle to perform at top capacity and will keep your stops at the gas station to a minimum.

Keeping your engine properly lubricated will also extend your vehicle’s life and mitigate any unwanted wear and tear on your powertrain.

Red Lights & More: How to Know When Your Engine Oil Is Low

So, how do you know when your engine is running low on juice? Well, there are early signs that make it easy to put the pieces together.

The first and most obvious sign is located directly in front of you on the dashboard. You may have already guessed it: the red Oil Warning Light. This light is usually shaped like an oil canister that is dripping fluid.

This comes on when the sensors in your vehicle notice that the oil pressure is getting low and should be the first indicator that oil is needed. After a prolonged time without new oil, physical signs may manifest and indicate that your engine needs oil. The most common symptoms are:

• Burning oil smell
• Unusual engine noise
• Decreased performance
• Overheating engine

Continued use after these signs may also lead to complete engine failure.

Use Your Dipstick

Checking OilIf you experience these low engine oil symptoms, you can always perform a dipstick test to see if the problem is oil-related.

This is a test you can do at home before you give us a call. To perform this test, make sure your vehicle is completely turned off and on a level surface. Then, pull the dipstick (which usually has a yellow handle) out of the engine and take a look.

There should be indicator marks on the side of it that will clearly show you whether your oil level is too low or too high. If there is an oil streak below the minimum mark, you will need service.
