Hyundai Kona vs Ford Escape: Hybrid Trims

Hyundai Kona vs Ford Escape

The future is now. Both Ford and Hyundai have eco-friendly models of the Escape and Kona, respectively.

With the Ford Escape, you can opt for its hybrid powertrain: a 2.5L I4 Atkinson-cycle powertrain with an 88 kW electric motor. Paired with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT), this Escape Hybrid delivers a smooth and eco-friendly drive. In fact, it can achieve up to an EPA-estimated 43 city/37 highway MPG.

What if I told you that you could skip the gas station entirely? Too good to be true, right? With the Hyundai Kona Electric, fuel stops are a thing of the past. As an all-electric SUV, the Kona Electric can take you to the farther corners of Pennsylvania without a drop of gas.

When fully charged, the Kona Electric achieves an EPA-estimated range of 258 miles.3 To put that into perspective, you could travel from Allentown to the Big Apple and back again—all without a fuel stop and with extra miles to spare. Live large while leaving a smaller carbon footprint with the Kona Electric’s 120 combined MPGe rating.2

Additionally, this Hyundai electric SUV can charge at home in nine hours and 35 minutes with a 220/240V outlet. You can also stop by a charging station, where a DC fast charger can replenish 80% of the charge in just 54 minutes.4

Hyundai Kona vs Ford Escape: Hybrid Performance

Hyundai Kona vs Ford Escape

Both the Escape and Kona deliver a stable yet energetic drive. In fact, they both have optional all-wheel drive systems to enhance traction when that Pennsylvania snow hits.

With the hybrid configurations, though, the Kona Electric utilizes regenerative braking. With this feature, the wheels’ mechanical energy is converted into electricity, which is then stored in the battery. When the Kona Electric needs an extra dose of electric power, it can easily unleash it!

As for the Ford Escape, it does provide substantial horsepower. With its hybrid powertrain, it generates up to 200 total system horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. The Hyundai Kona Electric and its 150-kW electric motor deliver up to 201 horsepower and 291 lb-ft of torque.

Press down on the accelerator of the Kona Electric to feel a surge of harnessed power—proving that efficiency and power can go hand in hand.

Hyundai Kona vs Ford Escape: Smart Technology

Both the Kona and Escape are as smart as they are powerful. For instance, they’re equipped with intelligent safety systems to keep you aware and alert on the road. The Kona is armed with Hyundai SmartSense technology, while the Escape has Ford Co-Pilot360™. Both safety suites come with the following features:

  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • High Beam Assist
  • Blind-Spot Collision Warning
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection

Additionally, the Kona comes standard with Driver Attention Warning. This intuitive feature monitors your driving patterns and alerts you if it detects distracted driving. Unfortunately, the Escape doesn’t have a comparable feature.

To adjust the volume, connect your smartphone, and much more, use the touchscreen displays. In the Ford Escape, the standard SYNC® system comes with a 4.2-inch display. As for the Kona, it has a standard 7-inch display. With the Kona’s larger display, it’ll be much easier to select your next song and use the apps.

Speaking of apps, sync up your smartphone with your SUV’s infotainment system with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. In the Kona, these features are standard. To get the same features in the Escape, you’ll have to upgrade to a higher trim.
